A rather disappointing French dinner at "Le Votre" in Yangshuo, one of the restaurants that got a better review in various travel forums. We weren't expecting too much from the "Great Wall Red" wine, but we were thinking that duck with cherry sauce would be good. Well, the sauce was nice, but the duck was tough and Dick thought it tasted old. Our lunches at the more humble spots in the area, on the other hand, have been fantastic. A sizzling eggplant hotpot was full of yummy Chinese eggplant and nice crisp slices of red/green pepper, along with some mint. Eggplant in brown sauce the next day was just as good, and we really enjoyed chicken with lemon, chicken with pineapple and the local fried rice/noodles Yangshuo style. As Dick said, maybe Chinese is the best choice in China :-)
We haven't been too adventurous yet in terms of trying snail, sparrow, pigeon, or the various organs of pork and beef, but stay tuned. Frog, at least, may be on the horizon.

I'm terrified of coming across MSG! It was such a shock to revisit the issues I have with it, when we were in French Polynesia....... where the Chinese were cooking!
Here it's virtually a banned substance, so I've gotten used to not having to worry about the violent stomach cramps it induces! And I do mean *violent*.
I will need Mandarin business card that reads "this person will curl up in ball and die at your feet if your food is not MSG free"!!!! I'm sure I can corrupt that even more to terrify even the most hardened waiter!!
